Black & Silver Drawings
(1999-2001)

Continuing the investigation of pattern and cosmology begun in my earlier work, for a three-year period between 1999-2001, I produced rigorous, large-format patterned drawings based on celestial maps, alchemical diagrams, classical architecture, and principles of geometry.

At the time, I was able to source heavyweight, oversized, jet black paper from the legendary paper department at New York Central Art Supply (closed 2016) in the East Village, NYC. I began each work by drawing a light, grided armature in pencil and then highlight sections of that grid with dashed lines in fluid silver metallic ink. Producing these works was certainly meditative, although more often they bordered on acts of mental and physical endurance — intense focus, rhythmic counting, and controlled breathing.

This body of work concluded when the specific paper I used went out of production.
